Behind Closed Doors

by B.A. Paris — This Book Had Me Ready to Fight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was the very first book pulled from my Viewer Suggestion TBR Jar… and wow.

I do not think I have ever gone from uncomfortable to furious this fast while reading a thriller.

By around 30% into the story I already felt stressed, angry, suspicious, and honestly scared all at once. This book taps directly into the fear of realizing someone is not who they pretend to be.

The entire setup immediately started screaming:
love bombing, manipulation, isolation, emotional control, and danger.

The moment I realized Jack likely chose Grace specifically because of her vulnerable family situation — her distant relationship with her parents and her deep love and responsibility toward Millie — the entire story shifted from “thriller” into full psychological horror territory for me.

And honestly?

That honeymoon trip was terrifying.

The mood swings.
The subtle threats.
The emotional whiplash.
The constant hot-and-cold behavior.

Personally, after the wedding morning alone I would have been OUT. Absolutely not getting on an international flight with a man acting like that. The fact that he had the IDs and full control of the situation made everything feel even darker.

The biggest red flag for me was how quickly he weaponized Millie.

He knew from the beginning that Millie was part of Grace’s life, and the second he started making her feel guilty for loving and prioritizing her hospitalized sister, every alarm bell in my head started going off.

Anyone who consistently dismisses your emotions, experiences, instincts, or boundaries is not a safe person.

And that’s what made this story feel so upsettingly realistic at times.

By the halfway point I switched over to the audiobook at 2x speed because the suspense was stressing me out so badly I physically needed answers.

The psychological abuse in this story honestly felt darker than many gore-heavy thrillers because of how calculated everything is. Jack treats people like experiments — almost like a theatrical game where he controls every movement, reaction, and emotion.

The balcony scene?
Horrifying.

The manipulation involving comfort, routine, and even room colors?
Disturbing.

The portrait reveals?
Absolutely chilling.

And honestly, the detail that made him even more terrifying was his profession.

A lawyer working with abused women.

That adds such an unsettling layer because it implies he studies fear, manipulation, trauma responses, and victim behavior professionally while secretly using that knowledge privately.

At some point I stopped wanting Grace to survive politely and started rooting for full survival mode. Millie honestly became one of my favorite parts of the story because she is incredibly smart and observant in ways people underestimate.

And the ending?

The author did an incredible job layering tension upon tension, slowly building the trap tighter and tighter while withholding just enough information to keep the suspense unbearable until the final reveal.

I also appreciated that the story continued after the major conflict instead of ending abruptly. The wrap-up felt emotionally satisfying while still staying tense right to the end.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars

This is an excellent thriller for readers who enjoy:

  • psychological manipulation

  • toxic relationships

  • suspense without heavy gore

  • emotional tension

  • “who did I marry?” energy

  • realistic horror rooted in control and abuse
