The Witch in the Well
— Creepy Atmosphere, Frustrating Delivery ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really struggled with this one because the actual story itself is something I wanted to enjoy.
The atmosphere is dark, eerie, unsettling, and full of supernatural mystery — exactly the kind of story setup I normally love. But the way the plot unfolds ended up being frustrating for me personally.
The story constantly jumps between history, present events, memories, and character experiences before giving enough context for what’s actually happening. Important information sometimes arrives much later, which made sections feel confusing and harder to follow than I wanted them to be.
By around Chapter 9, I was still sticking with it because I genuinely wanted answers.
I wanted to know:
Who was the woman in the well?
What really happened to her?
Is she actually possessing someone?
Or is something else happening entirely?
That mystery itself kept pulling me forward.
The story also focuses heavily on two former friends who are now adults clashing socially and professionally while both trying to tell their own version of the woman-in-the-well story. Each woman feels ownership over the narrative and becomes increasingly upset that the other is unknowingly writing about the same subject.
And honestly?
The feud between the two women sometimes overshadowed the supernatural elements for me.
At points, their petty fighting and competitiveness pulled focus away from the eerie witch storyline I was actually more interested in exploring. I kept wishing the supernatural horror had taken center stage more often instead of the interpersonal conflict.
That said, the overall concept was still compelling enough that I kept reading because it constantly felt like there was some major plot twist just waiting around the corner.
Overall, I liked the idea of this book more than the execution itself.
The creepy atmosphere, intertwined storytelling, and dark possessive undertones were all interesting, but I personally would have preferred a different style of delivery for the plot.
