The 19th Wife
— Disturbing, Fascinating, and Deeply Uncomfortable ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I gave this book 3 stars overall.
What stood out most to me while reading was honestly how unsettling it feels realizing one man can hold that much power over so many people in a modern setting. That aspect of the story was genuinely disturbing and fascinating at the same time.
I really would have liked more historical context surrounding mainstream Mormonism and the reasons polygamy stopped being practiced within the larger religion. I think the historical side could have added even more depth to the story and helped strengthen the contrast between modern society and the isolated extremist communities portrayed in the book.
To me, this felt less like a traditional mystery and more like a story exploring obsession, control, power dynamics, manipulation, and cult behavior.
And honestly, that part was the most interesting.
The psychology behind people who willingly live within these extreme power structures is incredibly fascinating to me. I kept wanting the story to go even deeper into the mindset of the man orchestrating so much chaos, emotional damage, and control over everyone around him.
I wanted more insight into why someone seeks that level of power, attention, and manipulation over other people’s lives.
Because the ripple effects throughout the story are exhausting, destructive, and deeply consuming for everyone involved.
Overall, I found this to be a disturbing but compelling read that explores cult-like control, religious extremism, and toxic power dynamics in a way that stays with you after finishing the book.
